Summary of our market study

The French sparkling wine market is estimated at €1 billion.

Crémant, a sparkling wine, is produced in specific regions of France using a traditional method. Sales of French Crémant have exceeded 100 million bottles, of which around 40% are exported

Demand for Crémant is growing both nationally and internationally, particularly in Germany, Belgium and the United States.

The Alsace, Burgundy and Loire regions are leading sales, while emerging regions such as Jura, Limoux and Bordeaux are posting impressive production growth.

Crémant differs from champagne in that it faces competition from foreign sparkling wines such as cava and prosecco.

Crémant producers are banking on product innovations, organic varieties and specific packaging to set themselves apart from champagne.

Growing popularity of crémant in the sparkling wine sector

Crémant, a sparkling wine produced in distinct appellation zones using traditional methods, is undergoing a remarkable evolution in the wine industry.

While general wine consumption in France is experiencing a slight slowdown, sales of crémant are impressively buoyant. This sparkling beverage is abandoning its formal image sometimes associated with champagne, and presenting itself as a festive, quality alternative that is gaining in popularity in France and internationally.

Demand for crémant is growing not only in France, but also in Germany, Belgium and the United States.

Crémant d'Alsace, in particular, enjoys an enhanced reputation abroad. Sales were between 80 and 85 million bottles in 2018. Three French regions - Alsace, Burgundy and Loire - are renowned for their sparkling wines. Jura saw its crémant production increase by 200%, Limoux saw growth of around 45-50%, and Bordeaux jumped an impressive 185%.

Crémants face competition from popular foreign sparkling wines such as cava and prosecco.

These competitors not only appeal to the French population, but are also vying for a substantial share of the world market for crémants.

Summary and extracts

1 Market overview

1.1 Definition and scope of study

Crément refers to a sparkling sparkling wine from a particular appellation area and obtained using a traditional method.

In a wine market that is suffering from the slow but steady decline in wine consumption in France sales of cremements continue to increase and the demand is not waning. Less ceremonious than champagne, crément reflects the image of a sparkling, festive and quality wine which makes its success and seduces as much in France as abroad. Indeed, demand is also growing outside France germany, Belgium and the United States are the three countries where the cremant is exported more and the famous crement d'alsace enjoys a growing reputation there.

While sales exceeded 83 million passes in 2018, three French regions stand out clearly: Alsace, Burgundy and the Loire, but other regions are on the rise. Between 2012 and 2018, the production of crémants from the Jura has increased by 200%, that of Limoux by 47% and it reaches 185% in Bordeaux.

If the differentiation with champagne is clear, the cremations are facing strong competition This is particularly true in the face of foreign sparkling wines such as cava and prosecco which seduce the French and compete for shares in export creams. The brands are seeking to stand out through attractive packaging, strong appellations and product innovations with organic vintages.
