Summary of our market study

The French mechanical subcontracting market

Over the last decade, until the pandemic years, this market enjoyed sustained growth, with an average annual growth rate of between 3% and 4%. The pandemic caused the market to shrink to just over 8 billion euros, before returning to over 10 billion euros

This rebound was fuelled by the upturn in investment in machinery and equipment production, and in the automotive and aerospace sectors

The market is highly fragmented, dominated mainly by regional players.

Entities such as Mecachrome, Alcen, WeAre, Linamar and Figeac, although important, share space with a multitude of smaller companies.

Imports of mechanical tools and accessories rose to between 1.2 and 1.4 billion euros, with mechanical tools for wood and metal leading the category.

Exports fell to between 700 and 800 million euros, mainly machine tool parts.

Mechanical subcontracting players

  • Mecachrome - Precision giant for the aerospace and automotive industries
  • Alcen serves sectors such as aerospace, energy, medical and defense.
  • The WeAre group has established itself as a consolidated network of companies, bringing together a range of expertise to serve primarily the aerospace sector, as well as defense and transportation.
  • Figeac Aéro - A master craftsman specializing in the manufacture of aerospace components

Summary and extracts

1 Market overview

1.1 Introduction

Mechanical subcontracting means that a client company uses the services and employees of another company to carry out a machining mission: the design and production of various mechanical parts.

Production is carried out using a variety of processes:

  • drilling
  • boring
  • milling
  • turning
  • grinding
  • grinding

The main industries served by mechanical subcontracting are: machinery and equipment, automotive, aerospace, construction and energy.

The subcontracting market is therefore directly impacted by what's going on for the players in these industries, and by the dynamism of their orders.

There are two main types of subcontracting[INSEE]:

  • Capacity subcontracting: Subcontracting is said to be capacity subcontracting when the client, equipped to produce a product himself, has recourse to a third party:
    • either occasionally, due to a temporary peak in activity or a technical incident.
    • or because they wish to maintain their own in-house production capacity.
  • Specialty subcontracting : Specialty subcontracting is when the client calls on a "specialist" who has the equipment, materials and skills suited to the client's needs.rials and skills adapted to its needs, because it cannot or does not wish to acquire them for reasons related to its own strategy.

In industrial mechanics, for example, subcontracting is often specialized: manufacturers need companies with certain machine tools, know-how concerning specific technical processes, and so on

The French market had been growing for some ten years, but was hit by the pandemic in 2020, so despite a certain rebound in 2021, pre-crisis levels have not been regained.

Another major feature of the market is that it is highly fragmented, with a multiplicity of regional players. The main players are : Mecachrome, Alcen, WeAre, Linamar, Figeac...
