1 Market Overview

1.1 Definition and presentation

Horseback riding is defined as the art, technique and activity of riding. Horseback riding as a sport has several disciplines and some of them are recognized at the Olympic level. The sport can be practiced either individually or in groups, within outdoor riding stables, racetracks or finally in the countryside.

Globally, the horseback riding market can be described as growing. One of the reasons for this growth is certainly the growing popularity of horseback riding as a sport after the 2012 London Olympics.

In the United States, the horseback riding market is estimated to be worth about $102 billion.

In Italy, the equestrian market can also be considered to be growing.

In 2021, FISE, or the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation, said that between January and April 2021, equestrian sports enrollments increased a great deal, from 66,624 members in the same period in 2020 to 101,034 in 2021 (marking an increase of about 66 percent).

This increase is due to both the promotional activities carried out by FISE and the impact of the pandemic that forced Italians into their homes for many, many months. Horseback riding represents a perfect sport for this historical moment as it can be done outdoors and spaced out, in total safety.

Those who enroll in this type of sport are mainly young children but lately also older boys, from 12 to 16-17 years old.

Another reason for this increase in enrollment has been the collaboration between different equestrian federations, which has enabled smaller clubs to get supports to overcome the difficulties of the pandemic and make horseback riding more accessible to the public. a new facilitated membership mode was also introduced, which increased enrollment even more, especially in smaller circles.

This growth has also brought an increase in requests from circles for school horses to cope with the increasing number of students.

1.4 Impact of Covid

The Covid-** pandemic has hit the horse world with disastrous financial, employment and animal health consequences. The analysis of the industry was presented at the last general assembly of FEEVA (***), which assembled reports from the equine industry, breeding and sports federations.

Restrictions, suspension of activities, and inability to move or transport equids have prevented owners from properly caring for their horses. Veterinary Doctors have not always been able to reach the equids in their care and provide them with the proper preventive and care treatments. With the pandemic, the risk of abandonment or insufficient care has significantly increased. The pandemic resulted in the closure of events, tourism, and training. Demand for all activities with equids dropped dramatically, horse racing stopped in most parts of the world (***).

In the two years of the pandemic, stables, such as gyms and cultural centers, between closures and restrictions, were among the sectors most affected by the pandemic, with the following being the timetable of closures and openings for stores and sports centers:
