Summary and extracts

1 Market Overview

1.1 Definition and presentation

Thrift stores are the stores that sell second-hand clothes, accessories and everything related to the clothing market. There are two types of second-hand stores:

  • Thrift stores operated by charities, where clothes are donated by individuals ;
  • Stores that operate on the warehouse-sale principle, in which individuals sell their clothes to the thrift store, which acts as a commercial intermediary.

Thrift stores are attractive in several ways: buyers can find cheap clothes with a vintage style, and sellers can give old clothes a second life.

All over the world, people are increasingly interested in the second-hand market, especially in the United States where this has been a long-standing habit.

In Italy, buying second-hand clothes at these stores is becoming increasingly popular and chic. Sales are driven mainly by young people and reflect a growing ecological awareness.

By 2022 in Italy, the value generated by the second-hand economy reached 25 billion euros, or 1.3 percent of the national GDP.

Physical stores are increasing in popularity; they are frequented not only by Gen Z, but also by Baby Boomers. However, the Internet is also playing a key role. indeed, the success of second-hand clothing and resale platforms such as Vinted and Depop is evident.
