Camping is a type of travel where travelers stay in mobile accommodation such as tents, caravans or motor homes. This type of vacation became popular in the early 20th century and is widely used today. Campgrounds offer sanitary facilities, electricity supply and different levels of comfort for guests. Compared to hotels, the cost of accommodation at campsites is usually cheaper. In most European countries, so-called "wild camping" is not allowed or is permitted under strict conditions.

Globally, the RV industry has experienced significant growth and was able to generate record revenues in 2021. Between 2020 and 2021 , thenumber of registered RVs worldwide increased by 19.1%, our research on the RV market found, and the camping trend is forecast to continue to grow, with the global camping market expanding at a compound annual growth rate(CAGR) of 8.54% between 2023 and 2027. Camping is particularly popular in countries such as the US, Netherlands and Germany. However, China is also enjoying increasing popularity of camping tourism.

Camping vacations experienced a boom in Germany during the Corona crisis. The popularity of camping trips increased as they were considered a safe way to enjoy vacation despite pandemic restrictions. Many Germans did not want to miss out on relaxation, sun and good weather and saw camping as a way to escape everyday life. Fear of infection at the vacation destination was also a factor in the rise in demand.

By 2020, the turnover of campsites in Germany increased on average at a compound annual growth rate(CAGR) of 4.58% the market is growing steadily, with most demand focused on southern Europe. RV manufacturers continue to experience high demand, but also face challenges such as supply issues.

  • The Berger Camping Group was founded in 1958 and has a network of 150 stores in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
  • The average size of Berger Camping stores in Germany is 3,000 m2.
  • France accounts for a third of all European outdoor tourism establishments.
  • Berger Camping opened its first French store in October in La Chapelle-des-Fougeretz, north of Rennes. Berger Camping's second store opened on April 15 in Dainville, near Arras in the Pas-de-Calais region.
  • Berger Camping's entry into the French market began in 2022 with the creation of an e-commerce site offering 20,000 different items.
