Le transport maritime désigne le transport de marchandises et d’humains à l’aide des voies maritimes. On s’intéresse ici au transport maritime de marchandises et non d’individus, par extension, la logistique maritime est également étudiée. 

Le transport maritime est l’un des piliers de la mondialisation de l’économie : il représente 80% de la valeur des échanges de biens au niveau international, et 90% des volumes. Le volume de transport du commerce maritime mondial s’élevait à plus de 11 milliards de tonnes chargées en 2019 contre 7,8 en 2009. L’Asie est la plaque tournante des échanges maritimes internationaux avec 41% des chargements et 62% des déchargements. Le marché a largement bénéficié de la pandémie de covid-19 avec une forte explosion des coûts du fret. Les biens ont tiré la consommation mondiale alors qu’un certain nombre de services étaient hors de portée du monde occidental en 2020 du fait des confinements, et dans une moindre mesure en 2021. L’ indice Baltic Exchange Dry qui synthétise les coûts de fret maritime est ainsi passé de moins de 1000 dollars en janvier 2020 à plus de 5000 dollars en octobre 2021. 

En Espagne, les cinq principaux ports en termes de volume de transport maritime de marchandises sont : Bahía de Algeciras, Valencia , Barcelonan, Cartagena et Huelva. Environ 60% des exportations espagnoles passent par des ports espagnols, un volume qui monte à 85% pour les importations, totalisant plus de 50% du commerce extérieur avec l'UE et 95% avec les pays tiers.
