YouTube is an American video-sharing website headquartered in San Bruno, California. Three former PayPal employees - Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim - founded the service in February 2005. Google acquired the site (now a Google subsidiary) in November 2006 for $1.65 billion

YouTube derives its advertising revenues from Google AdSense, a program that targets ads according to the site's content and audience. The vast majority of its videos are free, but there are exceptions, including paid subscription channels, movie rentals and YouTube Premium, a subscription service that offers ad-free access to the site and access to exclusive content made in partnership with existing users

In February 2017, more than 400 hours of content were uploaded to YouTube every minute, and one billion hours of content were viewed on YouTube every day. In August 2018, the site was ranked the second most popular site in the world, according to Alexa Internet
