The club was founded in 1950, initially under the name L'Olympique de Lyon et du Rhône, and reached D1 in its first year in the league. In 1987, Jean-Michel Aulas, the club's historic and emblematic president, arrived at the club with an "OL-Europe" project aimed at climbing back into D1 and reaching the European Cup within 4 years.
The club's men's team has now been playing in Ligue 1 for 30 years. The club also boasts one of the best women's teams in France, including Alex Morgan, the American star of women's soccer.
