Seafood: Mericq joins forces with Maison Blanc to open up the Paris market 24/04/2024
- Mericq, a heavyweight in seafood distribution, with sales of 412 million in 2023
- The group, based in Agen (Lot-et-Garonne), acquires a majority stake in Maison Blanc, with sales of 38 million in 2023, a specialist in the distribution of shellfish and fish at Rungis
- The Mericq family holds 91.5% of the capital.
- Since 2019, Maison Blanc has been in the hands of the Gillardeau family, oyster producers and suppliers to Mericq for three decades.
- Maison Blanc distributes Gillardeau oysters as well as those of some fifteen other oyster producers, with sales of 38 million euros.
- Mericq employs 1,000 people and has 30 sites in France, as well as 2 in Ireland and Spain.
- French seafood market estimated at 8 billion euros, at least 60% of which is sold through supermarkets.

- Fishing quotas for Mediterranean bluefin tuna, once an endangered species, have never been higher
- At the end of November, the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (Iccat) decided to increase the total allowable catch.
- It will rise from 36,000 tonnes in 2022 to 40,570 tonnes per year, including 21,503 tonnes for the European Union, over the period 2023-2025.
- For French fisheries, this means that around 6,600 tonnes of Mediterranean bluefin tuna can be caught from next year, compared with 6,000 tonnes this year.
