Founded in Munich in 1758 in the iron and steel industry, the German group began to specialize in railroads in the 19th century, followed by the construction of heavy vehicles. The Group is one of the world's leading manufacturers of trucks (commercial, industrial and special-purpose), buses and vans.

Gas turbines are grouped under the Group's Engine and Energy Solutions division. Man offers three gas turbines (THMs) for power generation. Gas turbines are a very specific segment of the Group's business, as it is the market leader in steam turbines. The Group's French subsidiary accounts for 5% of global sales. In 2011, Volkswagen acquired a majority stake in the Group, which it increased to 75% in 2012.

Man Turbo & Diesel was recently renamed Man Energy Solutions. A new entity will support the group's energy transition (decarbonization) by 2030.
