The Experimental Zooprophylactic Institutes (I.Z.S.), with their 10 central offices and 90 peripheral diagnostic sections, represent an important operational tool available to the National Health Service to ensure epidemiological surveillance, experimental research, personnel training, laboratory support and diagnostics in the context of official food control.
One or more Experimental Zooprophylactic Institutes may have centers dedicated to exotic animals. For example, by Law No. 6 of Feb. 18, 2010 , the Piedmont Region established the Regional Reference Center for Exotic Animals at the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d'Aosta, in order to provide technically and scientifically qualified support to the Regional Commission for Exotic Animals[IZS].
