The Washington Convention (CITES) is an international convention on international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora signed in 1975. The fundamental purpose of the Convention is to ensure that, where permitted, international commercial exploitation of a species of wild fauna or flora is sustainable for the species and compatible with the ecological role the species plays in its habitat. CITES has been adopted throughout the European Union through regulations directly applicable to member states.
