Altadis is Spain's oldest tobacco company, with almost four centuries of history. Founded in 1636 as the Institution de l'Estanco del Tabaco in Spain, the company evolved into a group that eventually merged with the French company Seita to form Altadis at the end of the 20th century.
Altadis was privatized in 1998, and since then has become increasingly important on an international scale, particularly following its integration with Seita in 2008, and the subsequent acquisition of the company by Imperial Tobacco, a British company.
